Mike DeJean's Testicular Cancer was Originally Diagnosed as Lymphoma

Welcome to Episode 67 of It Takes Balls

In this episode of It Takes Balls, Mike DeJean, a testicular cancer survivor from Louisiana, shares his powerful story of resilience through a journey that began with misdiagnosis and escalated to advanced treatment. Initially diagnosed with lymphoma, Mike eventually learned his true diagnosis—testicular cancer—following a biopsy that revealed embryonal carcinoma.

Mike describes the emotional and physical challenges of undergoing intensive VIP chemotherapy for stage 3 testicular cancer, including severe side effects like neuropathy, weakness, and the need for blood transfusions. He also recounts his decision to pursue surgery at Indiana University under the care of Dr. Cary after being presented with limited options elsewhere. The complex procedure involved the removal of numerous lymph nodes and his adrenal gland.

Recovery was far from straightforward, as Mike faced complications. Yet, with the support of his wife, children, and community, he persevered. Eight months later, he reflects on his progress, with tumor markers normalizing and follow-up scans showing no significant concerns.

Mike’s story underscores the importance of second opinions, early detection, and seeking specialized care. His candid account of the challenges and triumphs of survivorship serves as a reminder of the strength needed to face cancer and the critical role of a strong support system.
